The Parliamentary Labor, Social Development, and Population Committee met on Sunday to review the draft amendments to the 2024 Labor Law.

Speaker of the House Ahmed Safadi, Minister of Labor Khalid Al-Bakkar, and Minister of State Ahmed Al-Awaidi attended the session.

Chairing the meeting, MP Mutaz Abu Rumman emphasized the importance of the amendments in safeguarding workers' rights, particularly concerning leave for the death of a relative, a previously unaddressed issue. He stressed that the amendments aim to protect workers while refining provisions for better clarity and fairness.

Abu Rumman also highlighted the importance of fixed-term contracts and preventing discrimination in contract terminations.

Minister Al-Bakkar described the amendments as vital for protecting workers' rights and enhancing workplace oversight. He pointed out the introduction of flexible work arrangements and innovative employment models to meet market demands and increase labor force participation.

Al-Bakkar further explained that workers covered by social security must consult medical committees for healthcare benefits, while others may receive treatment through ministerial directives. He also emphasized that the law now clearly defines unjust dismissals and addresses labor market needs.

The amendments require institutions with more than 15 children of female employees to establish childcare facilities, supporting women’s participation in the workforce. Short-term contracts (under 14 days) will fall under the new flexible work system.

Minister Al-Awaidi clarified that workplace injuries are handled by the Social Security Law and distinguished them from occupational diseases, ensuring better worker protection. He also stated that fixed-term contracts protect workers' rights, and contracts exceeding one day automatically become indefinite.
