The Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Water has called for increased support for both the plant and livestock sectors, given their crucial role in bolstering the national economy and creating job opportunities.

The committee discussed ways to support livestock farmers and reduce feed prices.

The meeting was attended by Agriculture Minister Khaled Al-Hunaifat, Finance Minister Abdul-Hakim Al-Shibli, along with several officials and representatives from the agricultural sector.

Al-Shdaifat emphasized the importance of the agricultural sector in achieving food security and called for continued support for farmers while overcoming the challenges they face to ensure ongoing production.

Minister Al-Hunaifat highlighted that the ministry is working on a comprehensive vision to support the agricultural sector, stressing that plant and livestock production exceeded one billion dinars in 2024.

He added that the government provides annual support of 120 million dinars to livestock breeders through barley distribution, while working on mechanisms to reduce feed prices and support animal production.

The minister also noted that the ministry is focusing on improving the support system through more equitable and efficient distribution systems, as well as efforts to develop modern irrigation techniques and increase reliance on renewable energy in agricultural projects.

Al-Hunaifat further revealed plans to establish a center for the packaging and cooling of citrus fruits, which will enhance the competitiveness of agricultural products in both local and international markets.

Dana Al-Zoubi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, stated that the ministry is coordinating with the Ministry of Agriculture to support livestock breeders at all stages of feed supply, noting that the rising global prices of barley present a challenge to its import.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the committee made several recommendations, including increasing the amount of feed allocated per livestock, reducing feed prices, monitoring distribution centers, deferring farmers' outstanding loans, and amending the Farmers' Union Law.

The committee emphasized that these recommendations aim to strengthen the agricultural sector's role in achieving sustainability and supporting the national economy.
