Jordan sees 2.6% spike in food costs
Food prices in Jordan increased by 1.2 percent and 2.6 percent over the past two months, according to the World Bank’s data.
The World Bank also reported that the general consumer price index (CPI) rose by 1.56 percent in 2024 compared to 2023.
In December, consumer prices rose by 1.77 percent compared to the same month in 2023, bringing the CPI for 2024 to 110.71, up from 109.02 in 2023.
Inflation trends
The World Bank's report highlighted fluctuations in Jordan's CPI. The index declined by 0.7 percent in October after a marginal 0.1 percent increase in September. Earlier months saw consistent rises: 2.8 percent in August, 2.6 percent in July, 2 percent in June, and 2.1 percent in May.
Regional cooperation on food security
Jordan and Egypt’s agriculture ministers co-chaired the seventh session of the Joint Agricultural Technical Committee. The two nations agreed to remove barriers to agricultural trade, encourage investments, and involve the private sector in efforts to enhance food security and address growing demands.
Global food inflation
Globally, food inflation remains high, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Between September and December 2024, food price inflation exceeded 5 percent in:
- 72.2 percent of low-income countries
- 43.5 percent of lower-middle-income countries
- 38 percent of upper-middle-income countries and 7.4 percent of high-income countries
In 43.5 percent of the 161 countries included in the report, food price inflation outpaced general inflation.
