Peruvian President Dina Boluarte recently faced prosecutors to address questions about a two-week absence in July 2023 for nasal surgery, which she asserts was medically necessary rather than cosmetic.
The controversy arose as Boluarte, 62, did not appoint a caretaker president during her recovery, leading to accusations of abandoning her post, The Guardian reported.
Boluarte's team claims she fulfilled her presidential duties virtually while recuperating at a Lima clinic after undergoing rhinoplasty to address breathing issues. However, critics argue she failed to follow legal procedures by not delegating her powers to Congress or informing the public.
Calls for her removal from office have been echoed by some lawmakers, further intensifying the political pressure on her administration.
The president is also under investigation for alleged bribery involving luxury gifts, including Rolex watches and jewelry, and for her role in the deaths of over 50 protesters during a 2022 crackdown against demonstrations opposing her presidency. Boluarte denied all allegations.
Boluarte assumed office in December 2022, following the impeachment and imprisonment of her predecessor, Pedro Castillo, who attempted to dissolve Congress.
Previously serving as his vice president, Boluarte struggled with a lack of party support in Congress and currently faces a disapproval rating nearing 95 percent.
Peru’s political landscape remains highly volatile, with Boluarte as the sixth president in just eight years. Her term is set to end in 2026, as the nation grapples with ongoing instability and public discontent.
