Biden curbs AI chips export to “Israel”
US President Joe Biden issued new restrictions limiting exports of advanced chips used in artificial intelligence to a number of countries, with “Israel” notably making the list as a US-allied entity.
The decision by Biden, almost a week before he leaves the White House, is part of a strategy to protect chip technology produced in the United States and maintain its technological superiority for the West and its allies.
Companies like Nvidia and Intel will no longer be able to sell their most advanced chips. Any “Israeli” company wanting to buy these chips will have to submit a request to American authorities and explain what they intend to do with them.
A total of 18 countries are exempt from those restrictions. They are: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Republic of Korea, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan and the United Kingdom
It will take effect in 120 days.
