Rise in cigarette prices sparks outrage in Amman
Over the past 48 hours, cigarette prices have noticeably increased in several areas of Amman, as monitored by Roya.
During a market survey, the reporter discovered that prices have risen by at least 10-15 piasters per pack, with some stores increasing prices by 25 piasters. Citizens expressed frustration, calling on authorities to take action against shops and companies raising prices unlawfully.
Retailers Cite Company Decisions
Retailers revealed that most tobacco companies have implemented a 10-piaster hike per cigarette pack, effective Wednesday.
Public Backlash
The decision has angered smokers, who highlighted that cigarette prices in Jordan have risen by up to 25 piasters per pack over the last five months. Many blamed the previous government’s decision to raise tobacco taxes in late September, which led to a 10-piaster increase at the time.
No New Taxes Confirmed
Despite the price hikes, the Income and Sales Tax Department denied imposing any new taxes on cigarettes. Its spokesperson, Mousa Al-Tarawneh, clarified that no decisions have been made to increase or adjust cigarette taxes.
He also noted that there are eight tobacco companies in Jordan, suggesting that the recent price hikes might be the decision of individual companies.
