Thursday, Lebanese MP Melhem Khalaf left the Lebanese Parliament’s general hall after a 722-day sit-in, in adherence to the constitution, which mandates the continuous session until a president is elected.

He had remained in the hall since the presidency became vacant following the end of the previous president's term.

Earlier Thursday, the parliament elected Joseph Aoun as Lebanon’s new president, marking the end of Khalaf's protest. Local media reported that Khalaf packed his belongings in preparation for his departure and was seen taking photos of the ballot box and the council's preparations.

After 722 days, Khalaf will finally sleep in his own bed, having spent the nights on a couch in a nearby room.

During today’s presidential election session, Khalaf emphasized the importance of respecting the constitution, stating that MPs must not violate or suspend its rules. He called for a new beginning for Lebanon, one based on justice, law, and constitutional respect.
