Trudeau to resign as Canada's PM
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that he will step down once the Liberal Party selects a new leader.
Speaking to reporters in Ottawa, Trudeau, who has held office since 2015, stated, "I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister," following a prolonged political crisis that led key Liberal allies to call for his departure.
Reasons Why
Earlier Monday, CNN reported that Trudeau is set to announce his resignation as leader of the ruling Liberal Party, though he will remain in office until a new leader is chosen.
Facing mounting crises, including a trade conflict with Donald Trump, the resignation of key allies, and troubling opinion polls, Trudeau’s decision comes ahead of a general election expected to result in a significant loss for his party.
The Liberal Party is anticipated to struggle without a permanent leader, especially as the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, gains momentum.
Trudeau’s government has also been rocked by resignations, including that of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, who criticized his pre-election policies.
