Forces under the Syrian Interim Government launched a security operation on Monday aimed at former regime fighters in Latakia, following a similar operation conducted in Homs in recent days.

The Director of the Public Security Administration in Homs told the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) that the operations are intended to restore peace and stability in the region. Authorities confirmed that several suspects were arrested during the raids. Those found with evidence of criminal activity were referred to the judiciary, while others were released. Investigations remain ongoing for certain individuals.

Escalating Tensions in Coastal Regions

The recent operations follow armed incidents in coastal areas, including an ambush that resulted in the deaths of 14 Interim Government forces in the countryside of Tartus. In response, security operations were intensified, leading to the deaths of several fighters loyal to the former regime.

Among those killed was Shuja Al-Ali, who was responsible for the Houla massacre in Homs. Forces also apprehended Mohammed Kinjo, known as the "Butcher of Sednaya Prison."

Concerns Over Targeted Actions

Despite official statements emphasizing security objectives, activists on social media have raised concerns about the operations. Some claim that specific individuals, particularly from minority groups, were disproportionately targeted.

Before initiating the raids, the Interim Government had called on all former regime military personnel to regularize their status with the new administration. However, critics argue that legal and transparent trials, rather than military interventions, are necessary to ensure justice and reconciliation.

Operation Completed

The Director of Public Security in Homs announced the completion of the operation, stating its goal was to enhance security and stability. He confirmed that weapons caches were seized, and several individuals who failed to surrender their weapons over the past 13 years were arrested.

He assured that those proven guilty would face justice, while others were released. Remaining investigations are ongoing, and security checkpoints will remain in place to maintain order.

The director emphasized accountability through judicial processes and rejected any acts of revenge outside legal frameworks. Residents were encouraged to report any misconduct by security forces, with promises to address violations and restore rights.
