US group Hostage Aid Worldwide (HAW) claimed that missing Syrian-American Bishop Yohanna Ibrahim was detained by the ousted Syrian government, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

"He is a US citizen," Nizar Zakka from HAW told reporters in Damascus, adding Ibrahim "was seen in 2018 in Branch 291" of the security forces.

Ibrahim has been missing since 2013. His disappearance occurred during a critical mission in which he was traveling alongside Boulos Yazigi, another bishop, to negotiate the release of two kidnapped priests.

The circumstances surrounding Ibrahim's abduction remain unclear. It was widely believed that the kidnappers were Chechen militants.

In March 2019, new developments emerged when a Lebanese newspaper reported that Syrian democrats were actively negotiating for Ibrahim's release from Daesh.
