New Syrian flag raised over Syrian embassy in Amman

In a significant display of national pride and political change, the new Syrian flag was raised over the Syrian embassy in Amman on December 18. This event marks a symbolic shift as Syria undergoes a transition following the recent downfall of President Bashar Al-Assad's regime.

The decision to raise the new flag comes at a crucial time for Syria, as the country begins to navigate a post-Assad era. With ongoing efforts to restore stability and rebuild, this gesture signifies a commitment to national unity and the hope for a brighter future.

The old Syrian flag, which featured three horizontal stripes—red at the top, white in the middle, and black at the bottom—accompanied by two green stars in the center, became associated with the Assad regime and its policies. 

Adopted in 1980, this flag was a reflection of the Ba'athist ideology that governed Syria for decades. The colors and symbols were meant to represent Arab unity and socialism, but over time, they became tainted by the government's authoritarian rule, repression, and the brutal civil war that tore the country apart.

Whereas, the modified independence flag emerged during the civil war as the Syrian opposition, represented by the Syrian National Council and later the Syrian National Coalition, sought to distance themselves from the symbols of the Assad regime.

The modified flag was first used as a universal emblem of the opposition in late 2011, reflecting the desire for liberation from a repressive government. By invoking the flag from the era of independence from French colonial rule, the opposition aimed to reconnect with the nation’s historical identity and aspirations for self-determination.

The opposition flag, and now the flag that represents Syria, keeps the same green-red-black-white colors. However, the top stripe is green and there are three red stars at the center instead of 2 green stars.
