Man sentenced to death for brutal murder of 60-year-old in Irbid
The Grand Criminal Court sentenced a 30-year-old man to death for the brutal murder of a 60-year-old man in Irbid Governorate.
The defendant was found guilty of fatally stabbing the victim and striking him with blunt objects, all in an attempt to steal the victim's vehicle, a sum of JD15, two gas cylinders, and a wooden ladder.
The court determined that the defendant, known for selling pickles, committed intentional homicide under Article 328(2) of the Penal Code. Another individual involved in the incident was acquitted of charges related to complicity in premeditated murder, car theft, and robbery.
The crime took place in April when the defendant and the victim became acquainted through the defendant's work. The victim, who lived alone, had previously hired the defendant to help with weeding in his yard, offering him JD10 for the task. They later agreed that the defendant would return to remove additional weeds for another JD10.
On the day of the murder, the defendant contacted a second individual to assist him with the weeding job. While the second man stayed in the garden, the defendant entered the victim's apartment through a side entrance that was out of view of security cameras. The victim was asleep when the defendant attacked him, striking him multiple times with a pipe and other objects before delivering a fatal stab wound to his back.
Following the murder, the defendant stole two mobile phones, JD15, a leather wallet, two gas cylinders, a wooden ladder, and the victim's vehicle. He later enlisted the help of the second defendant to load the stolen items into the victim's car and transport them to the victim's brother's house.
After dropping off the second defendant, he paid him JD 10 for his assistance and refueled the vehicle with an additional JD5.
The crime came to light when a neighbor discovered the victim’s body and reported it to the authorities. The police subsequently apprehended the defendant, who confessed to the crime during questioning.
