Jordan to roll out electronic passports in early 2025
Jordan's Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship has confirmed that electronic passports will begin to be issued at the start of the upcoming year.
In a press statement, the ministry confirmed that the new paper passports will feature an internal encrypted chip containing the holder's personal and biometric data.
The ministry also noted that the electronic passports will be compatible with electronic gates at airports, streamlining travel procedures and saving time for passengers. The public key infrastructure system for the passport has already been successfully installed and is operational, the statement added.
Additionally, the ministry confirmed that Jordan’s official digital certificate has been issued and will soon be approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in line with global standards.
Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, Sami Smeirat, emphasized that this step reflects the government’s commitment to digital transformation.
Smeirat further confirmed that the activation of the public key infrastructure system is part of the final preparations for the electronic passport launch.
He also mentioned that the ministry has coordinated with the Ministry of Interior and the Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission to ensure the Civil Status and Passports Department is included in ICAO's public key directory for electronic travel documents.
