University student faces one-year in prison for cyber extortion of young woman
A university student in Amman was sentenced to one year in prison after threatening a young woman in her twenties with extortion.
The incident began on Facebook, where the student met the young woman, and they developed an unexpected relationship. As their online connection grew, the student requested private photos from her. Trusting him, she sent several personal images. However, what seemed to be a casual online relationship quickly turned into a nightmare for the young woman.
The student began to threaten her, stating that he would share her photos with her family and colleagues unless she met his financial and sexual demands. This harassment continued as he tried to exploit her fear of public humiliation.
The young woman decided to take action against the extortion. She filed a complaint with the Anti-Cybercrime Unit, which investigated the case. The evidence collected was substantial, enabling the court to rule based on Article 18 of the Cyber Crimes Law.
Initially, the student faced a three-year sentence for his actions. However, the young woman chose to waive her personal rights against him, leading to a reduction of his sentence to one year.
