Court upholds 10-year sentence, JD 10,000 fine for drug smuggler
The Court of Cassation upheld a 10-year temporary labor sentence and a fine of JD 10,000 for a drug dealer known for smuggling narcotics across the Jordan-Syria border.
In March 2024, the State Security Court convicted the defendant of importing narcotics (captagon pills), conspiracy to sell drugs for trafficking, and drug use.
The Court of Cassation's ruling revealed that the defendant was well-known for his involvement in drug trafficking between Jordan and Syria, having imported substantial quantities of narcotics from Syrian territory.
In August 2023, authorities arrested the defendant in Mafraq Governorate, where they seized a Kalashnikov rifle, 173 rounds of ammunition, a radio device, and three mobile phones used for drug smuggling operations from Syria to Jordan.
Additionally, law enforcement found voice messages and images related to captagon pills, as well as coordinates for specific smuggling routes in the border area. Evidence also included photos of cash in Jordanian currency and other related materials.
The Court of Cassation affirmed that the State Security Court's ruling adhered to legal standards regarding the facts, reasoning, and sentence, and found no legal errors, thereby confirming the original judgment.
