Resolution 1701, issued by the United Nations Security Council, aimed to end the 34-day war between “Israel” and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon in 2006.
It includes provisions to maintain security and peace and enforce a ceasefire.
In an exclusive interview with Roya, Makary said Lebanon is moving toward a swift ceasefire and implementing Resolution 1701, though he acknowledged that it remains challenging.
Makary noted that 1.5 million Lebanese have been displaced internally, and the Lebanese government is collaborating with international organizations to support those affected.
“Things in Lebanon cannot continue this way; peace is difficult with such an enemy," Makary added.
The minister emphasized Lebanon's commitment to a peaceful settlement and a new strategy to ensure stability, stressing that a unified commitment across all Lebanese factions serves everyone’s interests.
Makary expressed optimism for diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating the conflict and securing a ceasefire, noting his confidence in the US Senior Advisor Amos Hochstein, who previously worked with the Lebanese government on maritime boundary delineation with “Israel” due to his connections.
