Counterfeit sexual enhancers: Higher Population Council warns public
The Higher Population Council in Jordan, in collaboration with the Knowledge Platform for Sexual and Reproductive Health, has released a report highlighting the dangers of using sexual enhancers.
The report aims to raise public awareness about the risks of counterfeit and smuggled products sold online and through social media platforms.
The report says that counterfeit sexual enhancers often contain dangerous contaminants added to reduce production costs or mimic the appearance and properties of original products.
It noted that these counterfeit drugs are manufactured in unsanitary conditions and do not meet medical standards.
They often contain incorrect ingredients or inaccurate dosages of active substances, and frequently lack warning labels regarding usage restrictions or potential drug interactions.
The report also touched on the traditional use of plants in Jordanian folk medicine for treating sexual dysfunction.
Scientific studies were conducted on 23 local plant species used for this purpose. The findings showed that while some of these plants enhance sexual performance, others produced negative results.
The report identified several factors affecting sexual health for both men and women.
For men, hormonal factors included a decline in testosterone levels with age, psychological factors such as depression and anxiety, and physical conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Smoking, alcohol, and drug addiction were also noted as contributing factors.
For women, hormonal changes related to childbirth, breastfeeding, and menopause were highlighted, along with psychological and physical factors similar to those affecting men.
