The US announced on Tuesday that it will admit Qatar into its Visa Waiver Program (VWP), enabling Qatari citizens to travel to the US without a visa for up to 90 days, effective no later than December 1, as reported by Reuters.

The announcement was made by the US Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State, which noted that Qatar is the first Gulf nation to be granted entry into the program.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the importance of Qatar's compliance with the program’s security requirements, stating, "Qatar’s fulfillment of the stringent security requirements to join the Visa Waiver Program will deepen our strategic partnership and enhance the flow of people and commerce between our two countries."

The US also praised Doha for fulfilling the stringent security requirements necessary for admission.

A US administration official highlighted the robust defense relationship between the U.S. and Qatar, commending the country for its proactive stance on pressing the Taliban regarding human rights, mediating discussions between Hamas and “Israeli” officials, and its humanitarian efforts in Sudan, among other initiatives.

The VWP permits visitors from participating countries to enter the US for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa, contingent upon meeting criteria related to counter-terrorism, law enforcement, immigration enforcement, document security, and border management.

Qatar's admission to the program follows a comprehensive effort by the Qatari government to meet all requirements, including enhancing cooperation on information sharing regarding terrorism and serious crimes.

With Qatar’s inclusion, it becomes the 42nd country to join the VWP, a selective list that has seen infrequent additions, Croatia was included in 2021 and Israel in 2022. Member countries must extend similar visa-free travel rights to US citizens.

Currently, US citizens can travel to Qatar without a visa, but starting October 1, they will be permitted to stay for up to 90 days, an increase from the previous limit of 30 days.
