The Swedish government announced plans to substantially increase financial assistance for immigrants who voluntarily choose to return to their home countries, Anadolu Agency reported.

Effective in 2026, eligible individuals will be able to receive up to 350,000 Swedish kronor (approximately USD 34,000), a substantial increase from the current maximum of 10,000 kronor (approximately USD 976).

The decision comes despite recommendations from a government-appointed inquiry last month against a significant hike in the grant.

Migration Minister Johan Forssell emphasized that this move aligns with Sweden's broader efforts to address immigration and crime issues.

While the anti-immigrant Sweden Democrats have long advocated for increased financial incentives for voluntary returns, the government's decision has sparked mixed reactions.

Some critics argue that the higher grant could encourage more people to leave Sweden, leading to a potential “brain drain” and negative economic consequences. However, proponents maintain that it is a humane and effective way to manage migration flows and reduce social tensions.
