National ID card requirement for voting, election commission says
As Election Day approaches, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) issued a statement confirming that the national ID card, issued by the Civil Status and Passports Department, is the primary document required to exercise the right to vote, as stipulated in paragraph (m) of Article 4 of the Election Law.
In the statement, the IEC clarified that the main offices of the Civil Status and Passports Department will be open on Tuesday, Election Day, to allow citizens to issue or renew their ID cards.
The IEC also announced extended working hours on Sunday and Monday, September 8 and 9, until 6 PM to facilitate the issuance of ID cards and ensure citizens are prepared to participate in the elections.
The statement also noted that Minister of Interior Mazen Faraya has designated Tuesday as an official working day for the main offices of the Civil Status and Passports Department in Amman and other governorates to ensure uninterrupted services related to ID card issuance.
This decision follows the IEC’s directives to remove obstacles for citizens and ensure their smooth participation in the election process.
Additionally, the working hours of smart ID card issuance offices will be extended on Sunday and Monday to ensure all requests are processed, allowing citizens to take part in the elections without any hindrance.
