Jordan prepares for upcoming elections with new measures for transparency
The head of the Independent Election Commission (IEC), Eng. Musa Maaytah, confirmed that the IEC is fully prepared for the upcoming election day, which is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 10.
In an exclusive interview with Roya on Friday, Maaytah revealed that a new electronic platform will be launched to allow citizens to follow the election results in real time. Additionally, the vote counting process will be broadcast live, a first-time initiative aimed at enhancing transparency.
He emphasized that citizens can access detailed election results through this platform, ensuring they stay informed as results come in.
Maaytah urged citizens to participate in the elections and cast their votes for the candidates who represent them best. He assured that all necessary preparations for the electoral process have been completed, including voter registration, setting up polling centers, and allocating voters to specific stations.
He further mentioned that the IEC recently finalized all essential preparations, including reviewing registration applications and ensuring that all necessary materials are available for voters at polling stations.
On election day, representatives of the candidates will be present in the polling rooms to monitor the process. Both international and local observers will also oversee the elections, and international guests will be present to witness the electoral process.
Maaytah highlighted that the 2024 elections will differ from previous ones due to the new law, which aims to strengthen the role of political parties. He added that international and local observers, including those from the Arab League and various Arab human rights organizations, will be monitoring the elections.
The voting process will commence at 7:00 AM and conclude at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, with no extensions. However, voters who are inside the polling stations when the polls close will still be allowed to cast their ballots.
After the polls close, the ballots will be counted in the presence of candidate representatives and media personnel. The vote count will be matched with the voter registry, and the results will be announced publicly. Both electronic and paper records will be created, with copies provided to each representative and posted on a board at the polling center. The final results will be announced after verification, with the presence of representatives and media.
Maaytah also stated that the initial results will be announced by the head of the electoral district, while the IEC Board of Commissioners will declare the final results after thorough verification.
He noted that 41 seats, accounting for 30 percent of the total, will be allocated to political parties in this election, which is expected to increase voter turnout and further enhance the role of political parties in the political process.
