Umm el-Jimal has been added to UNESCO's World Heritage List during the 46th committee meeting held in India. This addition complements the existing list that includes Petra, Qasr al-Amra, Umm al-Rasas, Wadi Rum, Baptism Site, and Salt.

Tourism and Antiquities Minister Makram Qaisi remarked, "Today, we celebrate not only Umm el-Jimal’s inclusion on UNESCO's World Heritage List but also the longstanding relationship between the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and your esteemed organization, which has lasted for decades."

"Umm el-Jimal is the third Nabataean city after Petra and Umm al-Rasas, representing the northern extension of Nabataean rule and showcasing their ability to build a sustainable and intelligent system despite water scarcity. It also symbolizes the resilience of the people in the region then and even today,” he added.

Umm el-Jimal inclusion was based on the “outstanding universal value” outlined in the Jordanian submission filed in 2022. It also met UNESCO's criteria for safety, authenticity, and an adequate protection and management system to ensure the site's preservation.
