Car thefts in Jordan decrease in 2024

The 2023 Criminal Statistics Report issued by the Public Security Directorate reveals a 13.01 percent decrease in vehicle thefts in Jordan compared to 2022.

According to the report, which was reviewed by Roya, there were 367 vehicle thefts last year, down from 422 in 2022, accounting for 1.61 percent of all crimes committed in 2023.

In this report, a vehicle theft case is reported when an individual attempts to steal the vehicle itself or steals any properties inside of it.

The report shows that a total of 17,205 criminal offenses were recorded last year, distributed as follows:

7,403 in the capital region, 3,325 in the central region, 4,336 in the northern region, and 1,421 in the southern region, with an additional 720 in the northern, central, and southern Badia regions. Of these, vehicle thefts numbered 367.

Specifically, the number of vehicle thefts committed by foreigners increased to 32 in 2023, up from 26 in 2022, marking a 23 percent rise.

Additionally, the number of vehicle thefts committed by minors rose to 13 in 2023 from 6 in 2022, a 116.67 percent increase.

The report also noted that 73 vehicle theft cases from the past year remain under investigation, representing 19.89 percent of the total vehicle thefts reported.
