The Director of the Central Traffic Department at the Public Security Directorate (PSD), Colonel Firas Al-Rashid, revealed that pedestrian accidents accounted for 40 percent of road traffic fatalities in Jordan.

Rashid told the Public Security Radio on Sunday that the activation of traffic monitoring to enforce the amended traffic law contributed to a 20 percent reduction in fatalities during the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

Rashid noted that the department's personnel seized vehicles whose drivers had forged their license plates to evade violations, stressing that strict legal and administrative measures have been taken against these drivers.

Last Thursday, the PSD launched a media campaign for traffic awareness aimed to enhance road safety and promoting a traffic culture that seeks to improve the quality of traffic on Jordan's roads.

The Director of the PSD, Major General Dr. Obaidallah Al-Maaytah, instructed traffic departments to work according to plans and programs derived from the National Traffic Safety Strategy, headed by the Crown Prince.

His Highness emphasized the importance of the awareness aspect in promoting traffic safety and reducing human losses resulting from traffic accidents.

Maaytah directed commanders and directors to start a media campaign in coordination with partners in institutions and ministries, involving community organizations and media outlets.

The campaign aims to raise awareness among all groups, including drivers, pedestrians, and road users.
