The White House said today that Egypt has agreed to allow humanitarian aid by the United Nations through the Kerem Shalom Border Crossing and into the Gaza Strip.

The decision by Egypt came in a call between Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi with the US President Joe Biden – the White House said in a statement, cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

"President Biden welcomed the commitment from President al-Sisi to permit the flow of UN-provided humanitarian assistance" through the crossing, it said in a readout of the call, adding: "This will help save lives."
