On Tuesday, the US Congress passed a strict measure requiring the popular TikTok app to sever its connections with its parent company, ByteDance, and more broadly with China, in order to avoid being banned in the United States.

US President Joe Biden has stated his intention to sign this resolution, which was previously approved in the House of Representatives.

This move from American lawmakers is directed at TikTok, a highly popular app, and is part of a legislative package that includes providing assistance to Ukraine, Israeli Occupation, and Taiwan.

The Democratic president, who is seeking re-election in November, expressed his "concern" about TikTok during a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping in early April.

TikTok, in response, immediately protested the decision after it was passed in the House of Representatives on Saturday, arguing that banning TikTok "would violate the freedom of expression" of 170 million Americans.

- What does the decision entail? -

If implemented, ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, will be required to sell the app within 12 months, or else it will be removed from Apple and Google stores in the US.

- What are the implications? -

This decision raises significant concerns about TikTok's future in the United States and threatens to end one of the world's most popular social media platforms.

These developments are expected to strain US-China relations further, particularly amid escalating tensions between the two countries over trade and technology issues.
