Meta Oversight Board has concluded that prohibiting the use of the term "martyr" constitutes a limitation on freedom of expression.

The Meta Council, which oversees platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads, argued against the prohibition of the term "martyr," deeming it unnecessary.

Following a year-long review, the Meta Oversight Board has urged an end to the ban on the term "martyr" in both Arabic and English. They found the approach taken by the company, which owns Facebook, to be "overly restrictive" and noted that it unnecessarily silenced the voices of countless users.

Additionally, Meta's Oversight Board recognized that the rules regarding the ban on "martyr" failed to consider the various meanings of the term and resulted in the removal of content that did not endorse violent actions, as stated in the company's announcement.
