Pup Balltze, also known as Cheems, passed away, the owners confirmed Saturday.

The Shiba Inu, the dog that went viral on the internet and the star of many memes, was 12 years old and battled pancreatic cancer over the last several months.

The dog's owners wrote: "Ball Ball fell asleep on 8/18. He fell asleep Friday morning during his last thoracentesis surgery."

"Originally, we wanted to arrange chemotherapy or other possible treatment for him after this surgery, but now it's too late."

The owners urged fans not to feel sorrowful but instead to hold onto the happiness that Cheems brought to numerous individuals.

"Don't be sad, remember the joy that Balltze brought to the world. A Shiba Inu with a round smiling face that connects you and me, he has helped many people during the pandemic and brought a lot of joy to many of you, but now his mission is complete."

"I believe he runs freely through the sky and enjoys a delicious meal with his new friends. He will always be in my heart. I hope he can continue to bring joy to everyone in the online world, that is my only humble request."

They also expressed gratitude to the medical personnel who provided care and support to the dog over the past six months.
