Sam Smith cancels concert in Tel Aviv
British singer and songwriter Sam Smith canceled his concert in Tel Aviv, organizers announced Friday.
In a statement, the organizers said: "Due to unforeseeable technical and logistical problems on May 31, the concerts of that evening (including Sam Smith) will not happen."
Smith was scheduled to perform on May 31. The British singer has not given any public comment on the cancelation.
Earlier, the hashtag #SamDontGo went viral on social media, as fans called on Smith to not take part in the event.
The Palestinian advocacy group Adalah Justice Project had launched a campaign asking Smith to cancel the concert.
They wrote: "Hey @SamSmith -- You still have time to take a stance. Let the world know that playing for Israeli apartheid is not keeping your business clean!"
For its part, the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) tweeted: "Palestinians warmly welcome the news that @samsmith will not be performing in apartheid Israel, and avoiding artwashing or pinkwashing Israel’s oppression against Palestinians."
Notably, PACBI is a founding member of the Palestinian BDS National Committee.
Following the news, many took to social media to thank Smith for canceling the concert.
A social media user said: "Thank you Sam Smith for refusing to normalize apartheid."
Another said: "It's good that Sam Smith is canceling his trip to Palestine. The ugly face of occupation, apartheid and racial discrimination and cleansing that is policy and practice by the Zionist regime should be fought against by all free people on earth."
