Canadian lawmakers wore pink high heels inside the Parliament of Canada to raise awareness about gender-based violence participating in a ''Hope In High Heels'' campaign sponsored by Halton Women's Place, a women's shelter in Ontario.

The four-year-old campaign aims to educate boys and men about violence against women while raising funds for the women's shelter.

“'Violence against women is still prevalent in our society. Hope in Heels is an event that spreads awareness of violence against women while encouraging men and boys to be part of the solution. We wore their signature pink heels in support of this important cause,” Canadian Transport Minister Omar Alghabra wrote Thursday on Twitter, along with a video that shows men walking in the heels during the event.

However, reactions on social media showed that most people were not impressed by the move calling it “insulting,” “embarrassing” and “ridiculous.”

Many said that the event trivialized the issue of gender-based violence with one writing: “Canadian women, do you feel safer now? Or do you just feel that a bunch of virtue-signaling Liberal clowns are needlessly making fools of themselves?”

Another wrote: “I'm so embarrassed for you this actually made my scalp tingle.”
