Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand has called on Iran to end what Ottawa describes as destabilizing activities in the Middle East, including threats to vessels seeking to transit the Strait of Hormuz.
“Iran’s threats in the Strait of Hormuz, its unlawful nuclear activities, and its support for regional proxies continue to undermine global peace and security, and this must stop,” Anand said in a post on X.
She said Canada had outlined, alongside its finance minister, measures being taken with international partners to maintain pressure on Iran, including sanctions and efforts to restrict its ability to finance activities Ottawa describes as terrorism.
In a joint statement, Anand and Finance Minister said Canada “condemns Iran” and urged Tehran to immediately end its destabilizing activities across the Middle East.
The ministers said Iran’s continued threats against vessels attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz, its nuclear activities and support for regional proxy groups were undermining international peace and security.
Canada said it was working closely with partners, including within the G7, to maintain “significant pressure” on Iran.
The measures include support for efforts led by the US, France and Britain to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, as well as maintaining sanctions against Iran, including measures announced under the US-led “Economic Outcast” operation.
Ottawa also said it would continue supporting efforts to disrupt Iran’s ability to finance activities it considers terrorist.
“Canada will continue to take additional measures in coordination with our partners to advance peace and security in the region and maintain pressure on Iran to end its malign behavior,” the statement said.
