Following the deadly earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria last week, killing at least 35,000 people, here are the 10 countries with the highest risk of earthquakes:

Japan:

Japan has topped the list of the world’s most seismically active countries as it is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Its seismic network is the densest in the world due to the large number of earthquakes that occur there every day.

Indonesia:

Indonesia witnesses earthquakes of 6.0 magnitude and over almost every year.

China:

China is known for earthquakes being the most destructive. In 2008, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck Sichuan Province, killing over 87,000 people were killed or going missing.

Philippines:

It is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. Mountainous terrain and earthquakes cause deadly landslides. Following frequent natural disasters, many people living in this country build strong structures.

Iran:

This country is located along many tectonic plate boundaries and fault lines. In 1990, one of the strongest earthquakes occurred in Gilan Province, killing more than 40,000 people.

Turkey:

Turkey suffers from seismic activity due to its location near several major fault lines.

Peru:

Peru is located in the center of the Ring of Fire and often experiences small tremors and moderate to strong earthquakes.

The United States:

Despite that it is not located in a seismically active region, the US has a unique geological landscape that makes it susceptible to earthquakes.

Italy:

The country is prone to seismic activity due to its location on several fault lines. One of the deadliest earthquakes in Italy occurred in Messina in 1908, killing over 75,000.

Mexico:

Like s several other countries along the Pacific Ring of Fire, Mexico is vulnerable to regular seismic activity.
