Seismograph recording seismic activity of an earthquake.
Jordan records 26 earthquakes in January
The Jordan Seismological Observatory (JSO) recorded seismic activity across the country and region in January 2025, registering multiple earthquakes of varying magnitudes and locations, according to a statement obtained by Roya.
Local Earthquakes
The observatory said 26 local earthquakes were recorded last month, with magnitudes ranging from 1.5 to 2.9 on the Richter scale.
The Jordan Valley region, north of the Dead Sea, experienced the highest seismic activity, accounting for 16 of the recorded earthquakes.
Distribution of Local Earthquakes
Additionally, two earthquakes were detected in the Dead Sea region, while another two were recorded in the Gulf of Aqaba in southern Jordan.
The remaining earthquakes occurred beyond Jordan’s borders, including in Syria and Lebanon, though they were still within the observatory’s monitoring range.
Regional Seismic Activity
On a broader scale, the observatory reported 50 earthquakes in various locations outside Jordan, affecting Greece, Turkey, and Iran—all of which are known for their high seismic activity.
This data highlights the ongoing seismic activity in the region, particularly along the Jordan Rift Valley fault line, which runs through the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea.
