An expert on labor issues, Haitham Al-Khasawneh, told Roya that the majority of unemployed citizens are university graduates, 80 percent of which are women.

He pointed out that cultural pressures imposed by the local society prevents Jordanians from working in certain professions and sectors.

He explained that there was not a high number of expatriate workers applying for work permits because of the high fees and strict procedures imposed by the Ministry of Labor.

He noted that there is a significant number of expatriate workers who did not obtain work permits, and therefore work "illegally" in the Kingdom.

Khasawneh said that local labor is concentrated in a number of sectors, such as the tourism sector, and expatriate workers are concentrated in others.

He stressed that with the suitable training and qualification, local workers can replace expatriate workers in these sectors.

He explained that the concentration of expatriate workers in certain sectors is due to the requirement of long working hours, lack of vacation days and low wages.
