The House of Representatives, in its session held on Monday, chaired by the Parliament Speaker, Abdel Karim Al-Dughmi, approved a number of amendments to the draft law amending the Penal Code.

One of the amendments that the MPs approved, was imprisoning those who attempt to commit suicide in a public place for a period not exceeding six months and a fine of no more than JD 100, or one of these two penalties. The penalty will be doubled if it was a ‘mass suicide.’

Mass suicide occurs when a group of people simultaneously kill themselves.

The House of Representatives announced Monday that the discussion of the draft law after approving 29 out of 40 articles of the draft will continue Tuesday, April 26.

The delay in the start of the legislative session of the House of Representatives on Tuesday caused a commotion under the dome, as deputies expressed their objection to the lack of a quorum, such as MPs Ahmed Al-Qatawneh and Raed Smeirat. The session was scheduled to start at 10:30am to resume the discussion of amendments to the draft law amending the Penal Code.

The council had approved 29 of the 40 articles of the draft law.
