Britain Friday withdrew the license of the Russian state-funded channel RT to broadcast in the United Kingdom, following the Russian-Ukrainian wars.

The move comes after the European Union imposed a ban on the channel and halted RT's operations in the United States earlier this month, at a time when Western countries are seeking to impose sanctions on Russia with the aim of isolating it.

The pro-Kremlin channel was cut off in recent weeks in the UK after it was banned by the European Union because satellite companies based in Europe provide RT broadcasts to British platforms, but the British license was still valid as of Friday.

British media regulator Ofcom said it had "today withdrawn RT's license to broadcast in the UK, with immediate effect," adding that it did not consider it "appropriate" for RT to continue its operations in the country.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the withdrawal of the license as an example of the "anti-Russian madness" in Europe and the United States that undermines freedom of expression.

"The world is much bigger and more complex than Europe, and RT will continue to make its voice and opinion heard, for those who want to watch and listen," he added.
