'It’s very alien to see this in Europe': Prince William about Russian-Ukrainian war
Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, faced backlash after saying it was ‘alien’ to see war in Europe on Wednesday.
The statements he made while visiting the Ukrainian Cultural Center in London, drew heavy criticism.
According to the Washington Post, he said that for Britons of his generation, “it’s very alien to see this in Europe.”
The WP added that part of the backlash came from misleading media reports that made it seem like the Prince thought wars in Africa and Asia were more common, “though video of his comments didn’t show the comparison,” WP wrote.
Some of the backlash the prince faced involved people suggesting he reads “a book about [his] own family,” because “the war and bloodshed were initiated by [them],” according to what an editor at the Print, an Indian news site said.
“In India, they looted and plundered even as [many people] died of famine and their torture. The subcontinent still faces violence thanks to the seed they sowed before leaving,” he wrote, adding, “Such a racist comment by Prince William.”
The reporter who published the initial story which caused the backlash, apologized for ‘mishearing’ the prince and said: “The Duke of Cambridge on war in Europe. He doesn’t appear to have compared it to conflicts in Africa and Asia. In the chaos, a remark he made was misheard, starting a social media storm. Apologies for reporting that online.”
