Governor Cuomo resigns following sexual harassment allegations

New York Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo announced his resignation Tuesday after 11 women accused him of sexual harassment.

"I believe that given the circumstances, the best way to help now is to step aside," Cuomo said in a statement, adding that "my resignation will be effective within 14 days."

Cuomo, 63, has denied the accusation of sexual harassment, which was documented last week in a report by the New York attorney general's office.

But he said he wanted to make a "very deep apology" to any woman who had been offended by his behavior. 

"I've always been very close to people. (I confess) I embrace and kiss people spontaneously, whether women or men. I've done that all my life."

Cuomo will succeed Deputy Governor Kathleen Hochul, who is also a Democrat.
