The US Coast Guard announced Thursday that a record amount of cocaine and cannabis, worth $1.4 billion, was seized during several operations.

During a press conference in Port Everglades, Florida, the head of the 1st District of the Coast Guard, Admiral Stephen Boleyn, described the seized drugs, amounting to about 27 tons of cocaine and 650 kilograms of cannabis, as "the largest amount in the history of the Coast Guard."

Captain Todd Vance said that the seizures were carried out by several units of the Coast Guard, with the support of the Canadian Navy and air support from the US Border Guard.

"The efforts of this crew dealt a fatal blow in the fight against the criminal networks that have created the destabilizing effect that we are all witnessing in Central America and on our country's southern borders," he added.

According to US officials, the amount of drug seized is more than double what the US patrols seized during the whole of 2020.
