The Zarqa-Irbid road, in the area between Al Nuaima Triangle up to Arhab Triangle near the power station, is still in a deplorable state due to the poor asphalt mixtures and bad infrastructure that has not been paved or maintained for over 15 years and has caused loss of life - both human and material.

Despite several complaints over the decades, the Irbid-Zarqa road has yet to be maintained, with citizens confirming it is more dangerous than the desert highway prior to its maintenance.

Citizens explained to Roya that the road is not separated by a central island, noting it is a two-way road, and dozens of vehicles and heavy trucks take it, which poses many dangers to other route-takers and smaller vehicles.

In addition, the road has no lighting, and there are a plethora of potholes, uneven paving and a lack of barriers on most areas of the road, which leads to numerous accidents, despite it only being 14 kilometers long.

The people added that driving on the road has become very dangerous as a result of drivers avoiding potholes and uneven paths. Not only does this become dangerous, but it also becomes costly to car owners as a result of hitting potholes which does damage to cars.

Last year, the Ministry of Public Works announced its intention to submit a tender to maintain the road in 2020. A budget was allocated for its rehabilitation and referred to one of the contractors who won the terms of the bid.

At the time, the ministry said the road really needs to be rehabilitated, as the ministry is preparing a thorough study of the tender and preparing papers ahead of the road maintenance, noting they will be re-paving, separating it with a central island and installing adequate lighting.

Only a few days ago, a horrific collision occurred on the Irbid-Zarqa road, killing three people, including two children, in a scene that reaffirmed to Jordanians the need to pave and rehabilitate the road, which is considered one of the most dangerous roads in the Kingdom.
