Monday evening, a tanker loaded with gasoline lost control on the notorious Irbid-Zarqa road near a gas station. The vehicle overturned and crashed, leading to the closure of the road.

A security source told Roya that the tanker was loaded with 16,000 liters of 90 gauge gasoline.

The security source added that the accident resulted in gasoline leaking out into the road due to the vehicle crashing, noting it became a danger to drivers and other road users.

Several public security teams were present on the scene to ensure public safety and to divert traffic incoming from Zarqa, Balama, Al-Naima bridge and Irbid.

The security source confirmed that the accident did not cause any injuries.

Two days ago, citizens called for the maintenance of the Irbid-Zarqa road due to the safety hazards it poses.

The citizens told Roya that the road is in a 'deplorable state' due to the poor asphalt mixtures and bad infrastructure that has not been paved or maintained for over 15 years and has caused loss of life - both human and material.

Despite several complaints over the decades, the Irbid-Zarqa road has yet to be maintained, with citizens confirming it is more dangerous than the desert highway prior to its maintenance.

Citizens explained that the road is not separated by a central island, noting it is a two-way road, and dozens of vehicles and heavy trucks take it, which poses many dangers to other route-takers and smaller vehicles.

In addition, the road has no lighting, and there are a plethora of potholes, uneven paving and a lack of barriers on most areas of the road, which leads to numerous accidents, despite it only being 14 kilometers long.
