Italy records highest COVID-19 death toll in Europe, surpassing UK
Saturday, Italy surpassed the United Kingdom for the highest amount of COVID-19 deaths recorded in a European country, tallying 64,036.
Saturday, the Italian Minister of Health announced 649 new deaths within 24 hours and 1,903 cases. Globally, only the United States, Brazil, India and Mexico have more virus deaths.
According to data collected by Agence France-Presse on Europe, Italy surpassed the United Kingdom on Saturday (64,026 deaths), followed by France (57,567), Spain (47,624), Russia (46,453) and Poland (22,676)..
Since November 1, Italy has recorded more than 25,000 deaths, roughly equivalent to the total of deaths recorded between April 2 and the end of October, 25,463.
Belgium has the highest death rate per 100,000 population, with 154 deaths per 100,000 people, followed by Peru (111), Italy (106) and Spain (102). The United Kingdom recorded 94 deaths per 100,000 people.
