Amendments to be made to Jordanian Nationality Law

The House of Representatives has referred an amended draft law of the Jordanian Nationality Law to the legal committee before submitting it to the House for a vote.

In the draft, the government amended Article 15, which reads, "Every Jordanian may relinquish his nationality and replace it with a foreign one upon receiving approval from the Cabinet."

Based on the amendments, any citizen can relinquish his nationality upon approval from the Minister of Interior.

However, some MPs rejected the amendments.

Amendments have been also made to Article 17 of the law, as those who relinquished their nationalities to obtain a foreign one, can regain thei nationalities upon approval from the Interior minister.

The amended draft law must be approved by the National Assembly before a royal decree is issued ratifying it.
