King Abdullah to meet French President in Jerusalem talks
Jordan’s King Abdullah II will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron next week to discuss US President Donald Trump’s controversial recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The King will meet the Macron after holding talks on Tuesday with Pope Francis, according to a Royal Court statement.
Talks in the Vatican will tackle the latest developments linked to Jerusalem. King Abdullah will then travel to Paris to meet Macron to address the latest regional developments, added the court statement.
The Jordanian government, which is the custodian of the Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem's Old City, has condemned Trump’s decision as a violation of international law.
Trump's decision and his plans to move the US embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv have sparked widespread criticism and lead to protests across Palestine, Jordan and the rest of the world.
Last week, Macron said he did not support U.S. President Donald Trump’s “unilateral” decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and called for calm across the region.
“This decision is a regrettable decision that France does not approve of and goes against international law and all the resolutions of the U.N. Security Council,” Macron told reporters at a news conference in Algiers.
