A man is facing an attempted-murder charge after video appeared to show him trying to shove a stranger in front of a moving train in Seattle, Washington, on March 19.
Security footage captured on a platform at the Northgate light rail station shows a man looking at his phone while the suspect, later identified as Elisio Melendez, approaches him from behind and shoves him twice toward a train that was pulling into the station.
The King County Sheriff’s Office said the victim “was able to steady himself” before the suspect “ran off.”
Detectives then traced Melendez to a nearby “mental health community facility where he lived” and arrested him, according to the sheriff’s office.
“The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has charged him with Attempted Murder in the Second Degree,” they said.
According to KOMO News, Melendez has a long history of mental illness and violent behavior and, during his arraignment on Tuesday, March 31, a judge ordered that he undergo a mental health evaluation.
