  • Democrat Jon Ossoff won re-election to the US Senate in Georgia, defeating Republican Mike Collins.
  • Ossoff described Democratic victories in the midterms as a rejection of President Donald Trump's leadership.
  • He accused Trump of presiding over a government marked by "depravity, corruption and incompetence."

Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff said Tuesday that US voters had delivered a decisive rebuke to President Donald Trump, describing his party's victories in key midterm races as a rejection of the administration's record.

Speaking to supporters in Atlanta after winning re-election in Georgia, Ossoff accused Trump of leading a government marked by corruption and incompetence.

"In sweeping and decisive victories, the American people have rebuked the depravity, corruption and incompetence of the failed lame duck President Donald J. Trump," Ossoff said in an energetic victory speech.

His remarks framed the Democratic gains as a broader political repudiation of Trump, whose presidency and Republican leadership had become central issues in the midterm campaign.

Ossoff's victory was particularly significant for Democrats, as Republicans had viewed Georgia as a major opportunity to flip a Senate seat in a state Trump narrowly won in the 2024 presidential election. Ossoff defeated Republican US Representative Mike Collins, who had received Trump's endorsement, securing a second six-year term.

He was the only Democratic senator defending a seat in a state carried by Trump in 2024, making his re-election an important result for the party as it sought to regain control of the Senate.

The results came amid broader signs of voter dissatisfaction with the country's direction and Trump's leadership. CBS News exit polls put Trump's approval rating at 38%, while roughly three-quarters of voters said they were dissatisfied with the direction of the country.

Ossoff, who first entered the Senate in 2021 after winning a special runoff election in Georgia, has emerged as one of the Democratic Party's prominent critics of Trump. His re-election gives Democrats a high-profile victory in a closely contested state and strengthens the party's position heading into the next political cycle.
