  • Adam Hamawy is projected to defeat Republican Gregg Mele in New Jersey's 12th Congressional District.
  • He will succeed retiring Democratic Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman.
  • He is set to become New Jersey's first Muslim member of Congress.

Democrat Adam Hamawy, a surgeon and former US Army physician who has been outspoken in his support for Palestinian rights, is projected to win New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District, defeating Republican Gregg Mele and keeping the reliably Democratic seat in party hands, according to Decision Desk HQ.

Hamawy will succeed retiring Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, who won reelection in 2024 by a 25-point margin. His victory also makes him New Jersey’s first Muslim member of Congress.

Hamawy gained national attention in 2024 after becoming one of several American doctors trapped in Gaza when ‘Israel’ closed the Rafah border crossing. Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) intervened to help secure their evacuation. Duckworth, a former Army helicopter pilot, has credited Hamawy with saving her life after her helicopter was shot down in Iraq in 2004.

His medical missions to Gaza and firsthand experience treating Palestinians wounded in ‘Israel's’ military assault have shaped his political positions and advocacy for Palestinian rights.

Hamawy has called for an end to US military aid to ‘Israel’, a comprehensive arms embargo and recognition of the Palestinian right of return. He has also criticized Washington's support for ‘Israel's’ military campaign in Gaza and its policies toward Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

During his campaign, Hamawy positioned himself as a progressive voice on foreign policy, arguing that US taxpayer money should not fund military operations abroad while domestic healthcare and other public services remain underfunded.

He prevailed in a crowded Democratic primary earlier this year, securing the party's nomination in a race that drew national attention and support from prominent progressive figures. His election is expected to bring another outspoken advocate for Palestinian rights to Congress.
