Diplomatic efforts to end the eight-month US-'Israeli' war on Iran continued on Tuesday, with Qatar mediating between Washington and Tehran over a proposed agreement. US Vice President JD Vance said the two sides had made progress in indirect negotiations, while President Donald Trump claimed Iran was in a weak negotiating position and said a deal could happen. However, 'Israeli' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly urged Washington to resume military strikes after the November 3 midterm elections.

Despite the diplomatic push, the US carried out limited strikes against Iranian military targets on Qeshm Island, with American officials saying the operation targeted radar systems and missile launchers after Iranian forces fired at US assets. Trump described the operation as a "minor attack," while warning that Washington could strike Iran's suspected underground nuclear facility at Pickaxe Mountain at any time. Tehran, meanwhile, said no new agreement had been reached and threatened a "crushing response" to any renewed attack.

Tensions also intensified around the Strait of Hormuz, where the IRGC claimed several oil tankers caught fire or sank after violating Iranian navigation restrictions. Separately, an Indian-crewed dhow was attacked while sailing through the waterway, with Omani naval forces rescuing surviving crew members. Iran also claimed to have downed a US MQ-9 Reaper drone and seized control of two reconnaissance drones, although the claims have not been independently verified.

The confrontation continued to reverberate across the region, with the Saudi-led coalition reporting missile and drone interceptions and the Houthis claiming attacks against Saudi forces while denying targeting Mecca. Saudi Arabia and the United States discussed defense cooperation and regional security, as 'Israeli' forces continued strikes in southern Lebanon. Meanwhile, France opened a war crimes investigation into a 2024 'Israeli' airstrike in Beirut that killed seven civilians, adding another legal dimension to the wider regional conflict.

Two projectiles strike tanker near Oman’s coast, UKMTO says

A tanker was struck by two unidentified projectiles in the engine room northeast of Oman, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said on Wednesday.

UKMTO said it received a report of the incident 14 nautical miles northeast of Lima, Oman, after the vessel's Company Security Officer reported that the tanker had been hit by two unknown projectiles.

No casualties or environmental damage were reported, according to the maritime security agency.

UKMTO advised vessels transiting the area to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity as authorities investigate the incident.

The latest incident comes amid a series of attacks and security alerts involving commercial vessels across the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz. UKMTO has reported multiple ships struck by unidentified projectiles in recent weeks, including a tanker hit by two suspected limpet mines in the Strait of Hormuz on Oct. 30. The incidents have heightened concerns over maritime security along one of the world's most strategically important energy shipping routes.
