An Indian-crewed commercial dhow came under attack while sailing outbound through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, triggering an emergency maritime alert across the strategic international waterway.

According to a verified advisory issued by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the incident occurred on November 2 at approximately 11:05 UTC off the coast of Oman.

The UKMTO stated that it received reports from the Indian government confirming that the vessel had been targeted during its outbound transit. Following the attack, units from the Royal Navy of Oman deployed to the area and successfully rescued surviving crew members.

The agency noted that the current physical status of the dhow -including whether it sustained disabling damage or remains afloat- remains unconfirmed.

Regional authorities have opened an investigation into the circumstances and perpetrators of the attack.

In the interim, maritime security agencies have advised all commercial vessels operating in and around the Strait of Hormuz to transit with heightened vigilance and promptly report any suspicious activity.
