  • Specialized Bulgarian counter-terrorism squads immediately mobilized on the tarmac to inspect the aircraft
  • Chief Secretary of Bulgaria’s Ministry of Interior stated that investigators are working to trace the origin of the message

A commercial aircraft arriving from 'Israel' landed under emergency conditions at Sofia Airport in Bulgaria on Tuesday following a security alert triggered by an emailed bomb threat, according to local media.

Upon touchdown, the plane was guided to an isolated stand where officers from Bulgaria's specialized counter-terrorism unit and airport emergency personnel initiated comprehensive inspection procedures.

Lyubomir Nikolov, Chief Secretary of the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior, reported the incident to local media, stating that technical squads are actively examining the cabin, cargo compartments, and passenger baggage to determine whether any explosive materials were placed aboard.

Nikolov said that Bulgarian security agencies are working to identify the specific sender of the threatening email.

He highlighted that the aviation scare comes amid a broader series of anonymous electronic threats directed at several Bulgarian state institutions in recent days.

Addressing the risks, Nikolov said that threats directed against active passenger flights create significant operational hazards by forcing sudden course diversions and emergency responses. Authorities confirmed that security checks remain ongoing at Sofia Airport while investigators verify the credibility of the alert.
